She directly steals lyrics and melody from Doc Watson's recording of St. James Hospital in this song. That sucks, because I like Feist and enjoy this song. She needs to give him credit.
I'm pretty sure its about living a wild young life and ending in misery. Check out the Nina Simone version to get a better "feel" for the song. Hope this helps ;)
