LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- No. 1 Trinity advanced to the championship game of the 2012 Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament with a dominating 70-40 win over fifth-seeded Jeffersontown.
Trinity will play in tonight's championship game at 7:45 p.m. at Bellarmine's Knights Hall.
The Shamrocks extended their overall winning streak to nine games and remained unbeaten in the state of Kentucky at 12-0. Every win against in-state competition has been by at least 13 points.
With the win, Trinity advanced to the championship game of the tournament for the third time in program history. The Shamrocks are 2-0 all-time in the tournament's title game. Trinity is one of one two teams that have won multiple titles and have a perfect record in the finals of the Louisville Invitational Tournament all-time. The Shamrocks won titles in 2005 and 2010. Bryan Station has also won multiple titles and holds a perfect record in LIT finals games. The Defenders won titles in 1974 and 1981.
Junior guard Darryl Hicks had a game high 16 points, including four three-point field goals, to pace the Shamrocks. Senior guard and Morehead State signee Charles Foster added 11 points for the Shamrocks.
The Shamrocks were playing in the semifinals of the event for the third consecutive year. They improved to 3-1 all-time in the semifinals with the win and have won nine of their last ten games played in the Louisville Invitational Tournament.
After the teams exchanged field goals to open the game, Trinity went on a 17-0 run to take a 19-2 lead with 3:02 left in the first quarter after Miles Rice hit his second three-point field goal to cap the run. During the streak, the Shamrocks hit 3-of-3 from behind the three-point line and blocked four shots.
The Chargers fought back with a 10-3 run to open the second quarter, but it cut the lead to just ten at 24-14 with 3:02 left in the period.
The Shamrocks built on their big lead in the second half with a 13-2 run that put the lead to 30 at 51-20 late in the third quarter. Craig Owens had six during the run while James Quick added four points in the short two minutes spurt.
Notes: Trinity improved to 20-1 in the month of January over the last three years with the win...The Shamrocks are now 27-4 in its 31 regular season games.
