Establishing a second population is also critical because having all Javan rhinos in one population puts them at risk of extinction from disease or other catastrophic events like volcanic eruptions and tsunami. Ujung Kulon and surrounding areas were decimated by the eruption of Krakatau in 1883, one of the most violent volcanic events in modern times. Anak Krakatau (child of Krakatau) is still active, experiencing its most recent eruption in April 2008, when hot gases, rocks, and lava were released. On the Bowling for Rhinos trip in June of last year, Woodland Park Zoo keeper Rana Bayrakci briefly caught some of the Anak Krakatau activities on video .
