I show how I change the weights in my Tank Courier's CVT. I have a Dr. Pully Variator, but the procedure should be the same for most GY6 based scooters.

  • What type of cover do you have on your scooter? Is that an after market add on?

  • @georgenc40 That scooter was a Tank Courier, which was designed with the roof. Unfortunately, they no longer make them. Which really sucks since mine got stolen and completely trashed before I recovered it, and I wish I could get another one.

  • Thanks this helped me understand what I am about to do to derestrict (remove restricting washer) my Yamaha C3.

I'm considering changing the roller weights also but am not sure I fully understand the advantage. When you say the goal is to "have your engine at the optimal RPM for the most power at all stages of acceleration" does this mean that putting lighter weights in will improve my rate of acceleration as well as give me a higher top speed when going uphill?

  • @mjoa1 Engines have an rpm where they produce the most horsepower, the goal of messing with the weights in a CVT is to have your engine running at that RPM all the time when you are moving. Lighter weights can help, especially if you or your scooter is heavier, with getting a little more speed up hills. But you don't want to go too light or it might be difficult for your scooter to reach top speed, or you might be running it at higher RPM than optimal.

  • No, your top speed will not get any faster by changing the weights, unless for some reason your weights weren't heavy enough to achieve the maximum gear ratio in the first place. The goal with changing the weights is to have your engine at the optimal RPM for the most power at all stages of acceleration. If you have an RPM guage, and time to try different weights, this is pretty easy to test.

  • have you ever had the problem of the centre of the front pully getting worn by the crankshaft..resulting in its will just spin and wont grip on the crankshaft..

  • I haven't had that problem...

I only have 4500km on my scooter though, so who knows if it will crop up in the future.

  • from what i no, heavy weight = fast from stopped but lower top speed, light weights = slow start but a faster top speed, so to get the highest top speed should i get the lightest weight possible?

  • Awesome, I had some trouble removing the cover but a good video all in all.

  • nice video

  • Tk for this video :D

  • I always thought the variator plates front and aft were linked mechanically. Never knew the ones next to the flywheel clutch were spring loaded.
