So if he plays a 60 minute set with samples from like 100 artists, he has to kick back some royalties to whoever the copywright companies are? That's nuts. Somehow I don't think he would make enough money to tour like he does if that's the case.
It doesnt come directly out of his pocket. its a complicated process the whole thing. Venues (i.e a bar) have to pay a sort of permit to the royalty company to play public broadcasts in their premises. the bar then keeps a playlist of the music played in the place which is given to the royalty company to sort out payment. Its ilegal to make money from the recording (cd) not to play it live. He would be treated much the same way as a radio dj who also has to write a playlist for royalties
he cant make money on something that has been recorded by someone else. he makes money by touring, not album sales as he doesnt have permission to sell his music which is why his albums are free
@smakamura You couldn't be more wrong, he makes money off his albums, he has sold them before, he only offers them for free now to get his material out there to up concert attendence.
He's doesn't pay anyone royalties because his music falls under the Fair Use Act of media so he can use as much material he wants without owing anyone a cent.
