If you're a DIY gear-maker, you'll find lots of useful materials in stuff you might throw away. 500-600 fill power down isn't the cream of the crop, but it's useful in underquilts, top quilts, pillows and other stay-warm gear you can make yourself. A vacuum cleaner that doesn't use a disposable bag--if you clean it out really good first--serves as a useful picker-upper for down, since it's so messy to work with.

  • @TheGreenzgal I think you'll enjoy using it, too. I haven't made my underquilt, but when snow flies, and we're indoors more, I'll crank it out on the weekend. Not great 800+ fill power down, but it's usable down with some feathers.

  • Thank you, I was wondering how to remove down without getting it all over the place. Good idea!
