"Prelude to a Kiss" is a 1938 song composed by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills, with lyrics by Irving Gordon. Song is included on Billie Holiday's album "Velvet Mood." This album was released in 1956 on Clef Records. This is the only Billie Holiday album that is out of print. On alto saxophone (Benny Carter), guitar (Barney Kessel), trumpet (Harry Edison), piano (Jimmy Rowles), bass (John Simmons) and on drums (Larry Bunker).
This is the best version of this song on You Tube. Such a song needs to be handled with great delicacy and feeling. All the other versions are far too harsh and unromantic.

Well, folks . . . listen to "Sweets" Edison tickle that muted trumpet in the background.
I shook hands with him one night at Donte's in N. Hollywood.
When I think of the players I heard there . . . a golden time that will not pass my way
again . . .
