The classic Svea 123 Climber backpacking stove. This is the pre-R model with the angled valve stem and is no longer in production. The R model was introduced in 1974 and has a horizontal valve stem to accomodate the internal cleaning needle. The first 123 stoves were manufactured in 1955. Aside from the change to the valve stem they have remained unchanged and are still made under the Brunton label.

  • Correct and safe use of these stoves will not cause the safety valve to blow, or the stove to explode. Your stove was obviously over-heated & overpressurized and I have heard some similar stories in the past, but there are warning signs before this occurs and no stove should be left unattended for this reason. Also, on older stoves it's a good idea to replace the whole tank cap periodically to ensure that the valve is not degraded and non-functional.

  • Probably the best all-around stove ever made. Doesn't burn the hottest, isn't the lightest, but it's the most reliable and versatile. FYI a GSI 'Glacier' Stainless Steel Nalgene Bottle Cup is a perfect fit for the stove and holds two more ounces than the stock SVEA cup; it also has folding handles and is stainless steel.

  • I just ordered a Svea 123R last night and it shipped out this afternoon. I love the simplicity and timeless design. I do have a question. How many minutes can I expect the stove to run on a full tank of fuel?

    Thanks in advance!

  • 40 minutes or so on a "full" tank (which should be filled only 2/3 full to allow pressure build up).

  • what a great video! thanks for making it! i love to hear the roar of the flame. i have this model SVEA 123, it has the separate cleaning wire and the box says "take along a warm friend". i normally use paste to prime it but just bought a pump off ebay . anyone else use a pump on their svea?

  • Never needed a pump on the SVEA, but do on the 8r. I guess for higher altitudes and/or cold weather it would be quite a benefit, though.

  • @danderson8127 try using alcohol in sewing machine oiler bottle with the long tip or needle. The alcohol does not cause black soot on your SVEA and easier to light etc.. Also you can use that Alcohol with a soda can stove if need for back up.

  • The older 123 here is the better one, but both could do with four pot supports for a little extra stability. I was using mine with a Trangia #27 kettle.

They are only a white gas stove & I use Panel Wipe #3 in the UK. T

I have had both versions of the stove: 123 & 123R.

The 8R has the same sort of burner and can take a Trangia 27 kettle in safety. The 8R on car fuel smelt of car exhaust. Burns cleanly on Panel Wipe #3 & Coleman Fuel.

  • Terrifying. Mine was retired after the safety valve stuck and the concave base popped/inverted, throwing a litre of boiling water over my legs. The stove jetted fuel till I managed to get the key back in the side to switch it off...

When I approached Optimus, I received a terse reply that I was plainly using the wrong fuel.

This is despite the label to the side advising that automotive fuel is acceptable. This is what I was using...

I have used MSR stoves since the incident.

  • that is just awesome

  • I just picked one up at a second hand store for $1. It's exactly like this with the slanted control valve. It's a beautiful stove and I intend to use it. I'm a lightweight packer but I appreciate where we've come from. I can remember when everyone had one of these 'cool' lookin' stove. I can't wait to make pancakes on it. Thanks for the deom.

  • This stove is so awesome. I bought it years ago at a garage sale thinking it was some broken WWII stove for less than $5. I started toying with it earlier to toady and after watching this video I got it up and running in a matter of min.

  • i found one of these in the woods behind my house
