SED-TV is something that no amount of words can describe. It is something that must be SEEN to be believed; literally. SlashGear journey in to the world of SED-TV through an actual demo. But, what exactly is SED-TV? To unravel the mysteries of SED-TV, a history lesson is quite helpful.

  • Elevator music anyone?

  • dam I hope they did not give up =(

  • I'm really sad that SED had to die. I was *really* looking forward to this. I can't stand LCD technology.

  • this is not just another video monitor technology but a revolution in display technology. the other revolution is high definition and the first color t.v. this SED display technology improves contrast ratio by 50,000:1 that NO other monitor currently on the market can handle.

  • @bishopdante On an IPS the colors aren't that bad :) Still not a CRT though, but I needed WUXGA badly...

We'll see how long the zr24w will last once I get a 22'' 4:3 tube next to it though :> Certainly will take over for gaming duties (playing warsow on the LCD is insanely limiting).

  • SED hasn't launched because:

#1 The manufacturing process relies upon perfect vacuum and glass plates which can't flex separated by millimetres. An LCD factory costs about $1 trillion, and there's 5 of them for the world right now. Making all these screens, more screens than we've ever had on the planet before. A *lot* more screens. Process is much harder than LCD.

#2 The patents for the system are hotly contested by two companies who won't share patents. Feud. It's that good srsly

  • @SpiritLwerewolf

LCD is horrible. Do a screen full of orange and then move your head up and down. Shocking, it usually goes from bright yellow or even green through to deep red. Viewing angle = colour.

Those sony tubes are indeed the business, although there are a few post-production grading CRT monitors by Sony which deliver even better results. Still sold today, new for about $50k.

  • @bishopdante Gotta agree, although that fw900 still is a beast of a display by today's standarts... Still can't find an LCD that's good at everything ^_^

  • SED still has the biggest issue CRT screens had! IT SHOOTS ELECTRONS DIRECTLY AT YOU....IE VERY BAD FOR YOUR EYES! ! ! ! !

  • epic vaporware
