Xmonad Mashed together with Compiz. - github.com/squarehimself/XMoniz

Most parts of Compiz work - but sometimes not as you would expect.
None of the workspace related plugins work correctly - such as expo or cube.
Animations work great for the most part - except when swapping workspaces between screens - and I do this a lot during the recording. You just cant tell because im only recording my left monitor.

and yeah its a crap video - i've had no sleep, and its just to show its working.

Low frame rate is because of recording - is very very smooth in actual use.

All thanks and credit go to tux_mark_5 #xmonad@freenode.net for creating patches for compiz.

The source is now on github - thanks squaredhimself

  • I... along with every other person in #archlinux-offtopic... am very interested in how this was patched together. Mind sharing?

  • @SquareHimself

tux_mark_5 #xmonad@irc.freenode.net gave me the patches to get compiz to work like this on xmonad, im afraid I dont know what he has done.

I have not seen him online for a long time - but if you want the patch off me - send me a message and i;ll hook you up.

  • I have only two questions:

    1. Do you have some screenshots of this configuration? - mainly interested in panel configuration and its configs.

    2. I like the music, what is it?

    Thank you.

  • @asfalatus What do you mean 'panel' configuration?

Send me a message if you have any questions

  • interesting, one of the points against tiling wm is lack of visual cues of window movement between panes etc.. animations to show you where everything went would make it more comfortable

  • @pcdude2143 I agree.

  • Source at github

    github.com/squarehimself/XMoniz

  • ¿ WTF. Aren't BOTH wm's ? they are mutually exclusive O_O

  • This would be a lot better than the traditional xmonad/xcompmgr setup, because it offloads the graphics functions to GPU, instead of leaving it idle most of the time.

  • Pretty damn good!

How did you get XMonad talking to Compiz? My guess is you loaded Compiz and Xmonad to run at the same time, then used the XMonad's EWMH compatibility functions to send events to Compiz? What I don't know is how you got XMonad to capture X Events before Compiz does. I am guessing you can disable Compiz's X event handler and force it to respond only to EWMH events?

I'd like to try it myself, but I wouldn't know where to start.

  • Can you please share the patches?

  • @LTS1287 compiz 0.9 split the functioning of the compositing and window manager parts so they can function on any system now iirc
