The last time I saw fireworks was back in 1995 when I was living in Brooklyn. They are complete random and it is still illegal to use it. But now, it reduced to many. I remember that since I was kid, I've seen it, and I was scared at first.

that looks awesome! wish we could do that in Hawaii. here it's illegal for anything that goes higher than 6 feet in the air. yeah i know sucks. but that's the law.

actually, yes, these fireworks are all illegal. cops patrol the beach entrances on the 4th, trying to keep the fireworks out but there's too many going off for them to be able to do anything about the stuff already on the beach, the entire town of santa cruz doesn't have enough cops to actually squash the ongoing party. People sneak fireworks in, usually burying them in the sand over the preceding days, or entering the beach through one of the houses that lines the cliffs.
