The Pakistan floods, which swept the length of the country six months ago this week, have thrown up a new humanitarian crisis....child malnutrition.
The UN's children's agency UNICEF, says urgent treatment is required.
A new report due out today in Sindh, the province most affected by the floods, suggests that twenty percent of all Pakistani children are malnourished.
Figures on child hunger in other flood regions that were due to be released today are being held back.

  • According to UNICEF, Pakistan is not facing a famine on the scale of Ethiopia, but the levels of malnutrition are as bad as those in Africa. The problem is also that the levels of malnutrition have never been formally acknowledged in Pakistan, because many communities and indeed medical practitioners tend to regard low body weight and stunting as being normal.

  • We certainly have our problems in Pakistan but I doubt that Pakistan has as bad a problem with hunger as Ethiopia.

    It could be much worse, we could've been the highest ranking Asian country on the hunger index, but we're not, that title belongs to India.
