Genetics and Biotechnology promise a future of unprecedented health and longevity: DNA screening could prevent many diseases, gene therapy could cure them and, thanks to lab-grown organs, the human body could be repaired as easily as a car, with spare parts readily available. Ultimately, the ageing process itself could be slowed down or even halted. Leading theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku looks at the revolution in genetics and biotechnology, which promises unprecedented health and longevity but also raises the spectre of a Frankenstein future of genetically engineered people. Will we, as transhumanists expect, evolve into a new species? Dr Kaku warns that we may end up in a world divided by genetic apartheid.

Visions of the Future:

Episode 1: The Intelligence Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlbuh3_ZKsE&feature=&p=29F92C58FECFAD7...
Theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku shows how, in the 21st century, artificial intelligence is going to become as ubiquitous as electricity, how robots with human-level intelligence may finally become a reality, and how we'll even be able to merge our minds with machine intelligence. As the challenges and choices are literally mind-bending, Dr Kaku asks how far we will ultimately go.

Episode 2: The Biotech Revolution

Episode 3: The Quantum Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InoMBWnTXpg&feature=&p=DF5B2A0926DEA64...
Theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku shows how quantum physics is giving mankind the power to manipulate the fundamental building blocks of matter. Science fiction ideas like the space elevator, teleportation, invisibility cloaks, or nanosized molecular machines might soon become a reality. But will we use our unprecedented scientific mastery wisely?

  • @Strange0ne yes. i am always in awe at the many wonders of my our world. unfortunately many people do not appreciate them.

  • does anyone watch this and feel totally and utterly awestruck at just how much the most applied/intelligent people on this planet achieve. I can't believe how little signifigance my life is going to have in terms of impact relative to the people who sequece genomes for example. Good for them to be doing such fascinating/beneficial work!

  • i bet that supercomputer gets really good porn.

  • @LoneSniperFox No. The graphics are only there to produce a basic interface.

  • @dgurevich1 Oh! so it's made for CoD

  • @LoneSniperFox (part 2)

The final result is a resource of processing power, which you can allocate to different tasks, from managing users, to calculating complex algorythms.

and as far as graphics go, these servers use an ATI 3d-rage GPU, which is about 10 years old. That's because they only need those in case you need to physically connect a screen to one, which in most cases never occurs.

  • @LoneSniperFox First of all, no.

Second, It is not a super computer.

    It is a Data Center.

The base for it is a Blade server. A motherboard with two quad core CPUs and 24 GB of RAM. This is essentially an x86 architecture computer, like your PC at home.

There are 8 Racks 8 Blade Centers can fit in one rack, Each Blade Center can fit 14 blades. That makes 3584 Individual units, or 12,845,056 CPU cores, each running at 1.86 Ghz. Basically all of those are configured into a "grid".

  • about that super computer... can it run Battlefield 3 on ultra?

  • @markuskentwood no, they don't pay. you contribute the idle resources for free. the only thing you get is the good feeling of having contributed for the good of Mankind:D

  • i wonder how much they'll charge us to be healthy human beings
