"Splat! Thunk! Zowie!", a work-in-progress from the LineStorm Animation workshops at the 2011 MIT Comic Book Fair, spotlights the dynamic comic book plosive words, sometimes called onomatopoeias, that erupt graphically from a comic's pages and panels. Each participant in the workshops had an hour to animate an introduction, display cycle and exit of his or her particular plosive. When possible, we added bursts of color to the imagery. Our hand-drawn animation, streaming at ten drawings per second, produces super-smooth motion. Our artwork originates on flipbooks, which are digitized in Frame Thief, compressed to QuickTime movies, then edited in Final Cut Pro. Many thanks to Community Giving at MIT for their sponsorship and support, to the MIT Lewis Music Library for introducing us to the excellent music of Danny Elfman, and to the hard-working animators, who gracefully designed "Splat! Thunk! Zowie!" under tremendous time pressure, from start to finish. This animation is produced for educational purposes only.
