Kapparot in Boro Park, Brooklyn 9/21/09

Here, I happened upon a Shochet (slaughterer) preparing to practice the ritual of Kapparot.
As you can see, he wasn't too happy about my filming him. He tried to hit me, but stopped himself. He ended up getting frustrated and throwing a cardboard carton at me.

You can see, in the background, chickens tightly packed in crates with NO food and NO water. I called the ASPCA to notify them. Some chickens were left in crates in the HOT sun.

This is a brutal and unnecessary practice, that is NOT in the Torah or the Talmud.
Please read Richard Schwartz's article on the practice: http://www.jewishveg.com/schwartz/kapparot.html
My grandfather, a kosher butcher, and a Tzadik (righteous person) who rescued many dogs, cats, and birds, denounced the practice of Kapparot. Still, he justified our eating of animals because, technically, though highly regulated, it is not forbidden in the Torah. He was under the impression, however, that the animals lived a good life, were treated humanely, and killed in the least stressful and most merciful way (the "swiftest stroke from the sharpest blade"), although, I personally find the terms "humane" and "killing" contradictory. In his final year of life, had occasion to visit a slaughterhouse. He was so revolted by what he saw, he gave up his business and became a vegetarian.

  • Hi yoquieroseramada,

Thanks. But he didn't actually make contact ... he stopped himself about an inch away. He wasn't that stupid. Had he made contact, I would have definitely pressed charges.

  • I'm sorry I don't understand why you are going and taking pictures of those people? Like you say that you have a right to take pictures it's a public street, they also have a right to follow their customs on a public street. The law, police didn't prohibit them from practicing their customs, why do you want to force your personal beliefs on them? "You don't have to do this" They know they don't have to, they believe and want to. Who are you to force your beliefs on others???

  • catharine555,

Just because it's "legal" doesn't make it ethically or morally right. Any decent person with even a shred of compassion for sentient life should look at the videos of the chickens suffering and find this cruel and unnecessary practice repugnant. Thankfully, most people do. It's only a small percentage of unconscious people on auto-pilot who do this. I'm glad to hear that you that you use money. Most rational people I know do, too.

  • i live a block from there and believe me they not supposed to do this things to a woman i am very surprised...no body said that you can't take picture in the street they don't own the street nither the neighborhood... you should report this incident to the authority you have proof...

  • Anyways I don't use chickens, I do it with money

  • Yisraelm, yes, that comment of 827rover disturbed me, too.

By the way, please watch A Sacred Duty (it's free on YouTube and at the web site). It may help to answer your question about eating meat (yes, we are allowed, but considering what an abomination the industry has become SHOULD we?).

  • 827rover, It's a very small percentage of the Jewish population who actually takes part in this. Sometimes the butchered birds are donated to the needy. The people who take part in these rituals need to be educated, as do all people eating meat and feeding it to their kids, and not admitting they are contributing to unimaginable suffering.

  • 827rover you sound like a genocidal maniac

It is people like you that were responsible for the Holocaust by calling for the extermination of Jews..
