Like most good children's songs, this one is SCARY!

It was composed in 1926 (Lyrics by Greatrix Newman, Music by Wolseley Charles), and was one of the songs that intrigued me in my childhood as I explored my parents' collection of 78 rpm recordings. I knew little about dragons, but I had a vivid mental picture of this thirteen-tailed monster.

The recording I knew was probably the one by John Charles Thomas. It was also recorded by Stanley Holloway, Jerome Hines and Joseph Shore.

  • I sang this song for a Choir related solo! i took a different style to it, but generally the same. You should all try singing this sometimes, its an amazing song. Think of it as releasing your inner medieval soul through your throat!

  • @EmoPinkKitty Thanks for that interesting comment!

  • your wife is verry lucky woman because your music.you are legend

  • @MegaVuks I think I'm lucky she puts up with my music!

  • My dear ol dad played this for us on 78 LP yes, 78!!! We loved it an this is the first time I have heard it in 40 years!

    Paul L.

  • If it was a 78 it couldn't be an LP! (Short for Long-Playing record).

Yes, I also first heard this on a 78 from my father's collection. Not a song you hear very often these days!

  • great play. Do not be modest

  • John Raitt sang it on T.V.

  • And kids love scary songs. This was one of my favourites as a young child.

  • This is the first time I've heard this song since Stanley Holloway on a vinyl lp in childhood. It's also the first time I've seen any information about who is responsible for the song and when it was written! Kids need a good scare once in a while. Keeps them in line. ;)
