ChemKnits created this video in response to some questions from GlitterMama regarding knitting charts and making them fit in projects. (I apologize for any rambling, this was made on the fly!) The easiest way to make a colorwork project is to start with the number of stitches in your desired product, and then from there design a chart that will fit into the project from the start.

I mention "calculations" a few time in the video but I do not go into details about how I performed these calculations. Overall, the most important thing is that you need more stitches in the project than you have in your chart. When Gauge = 5.5 sts/inch and you want the project to measure 10 inches (iPad case example), then 10*5.5 = 55 stitches.

If you want to keep the same size stocking but increase the number of stitches (in the snowflake example), then you need to increase your stitches per inch, too. In that example, if my gauge were 5 sts/inch, I would need the new gauge to be 10 sts/inch. This is a very drastic gauge change and would not be very easy to achieve (I chose it for the sake of an example), so you likely want to consider less drastic adjustments.

I hope this was helpful and that I did not confuse you further.

  • Thank you!

I needed this information like right now. I am in the process of charting and sizing a double knit scarf with text on it. I want to make sure the text fits within the width of the scarf. So you have confirm downsizing the needles and threads is indeed the solution. Your example showed same stitches different width while I want to do the same width different stitches. It's the same concept just the variable has changed. Anyway...

    Thanks!
