« I wonder what the title has to do with the Laborit's ideas. Does anyone know? »
As far as I remember the movie, each of the three main characters is reminded at one time of an "American uncle", that bears some similarity to what these character's later destiny. I remember that one of them went broke, probably Raguenau's (played by Depardieu). Jean Le Gall's (Roger Pierre) one is said to have suceeded there. No one heard about what Jeanine Garnier ever became. Three "pilot" life models.
I like how slowly it moves, showing experienced, adult characters making naive choices and having to deal with the consequences. The dream of a rich, distant relative leaving an inheritance is a romantic, immature one; the ideal of being "saved" by emotional or financial windfall and coming to terms with the innocence of such dreams--realizing that noone is going to swoop in and save you from mediocrity, be it a Daddy-figure paramour, your company or spouse--is achieving true independence.
Saw this on TMC last night. Felt weird at the beginning, but as it progressed, I was strangely drawn to it.

If anyone wants to see this, it often appears on IFC (Independent Film Channel) if you live in America. Great movie.
