Each of the interdependent motions we described in the previous section, has a certain effect. This way of looking at these voices inside the chords is called 'Counterpoint'. One of the principles we can use and that sound good is called Contrary Motion. Contrary motion is a form of voice leading between individual notes in a chord progression. And because the bass and melody notes jump out at us, contrary motion will be the most noticeable when it involves the lowest and the highest notes in a chord progression. In plain English: using this approach on a guitar means that when the bass goes up, the melody goes down and when the bass goes down, the melody goes up. The principle of contrary motion creates harmonic interdependent lines that sound pleasant to the ear.
