ADVENT CALENDAR Day 28 - Whataburger "Tree Lot" ad, 1999

It's Christmas Eve, and the guy who waited till the last minute finds slim pickins at the tree lot. The proprietor demurs when the guy tries to pay for the one last tree, saying "It's Christmas Eve," but his customer still finds a way to repay his kindness.

The ad, made in 1999 by Dallas-based Square One, was designed to be a "seasonal classic," in heavy rotation in the eight Southern states from Florida to Arizona, according to a press release I dug up on it. This copy's from a 2002 airing of "White Christmas" on KTXA (Channel 21). I'd never seen it before.

Whataburger's redesigned its bags and other packaging since this ad was made, which I imagine is part of the reason it doesn't run anymore.
