Content：The Russian president held talks with Pope Benedict about upgrading diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Moscow. Medvedev has signed a decree concerning the establishment of full diplomatic relations.

The Vatican and the former Soviet Union established diplomatic relations twenty years ago at the level of an office of representation. But now the new status means Russia and the Vatican will have fully-fledged embassies in Moscow and Rome.

Visits by Russian leaders to the Holy See in the past had failed to heal the 1,000-year-old division between the Roman Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church.
