See www.projectmf.org for more info.

Demo of a bluebox based on the 12F683 PIC microcontroller. A Bluebox was a hacker/phreaker tool of the 60's-70's that used a set of tones to simulate Bell's internal control tones and seize control of the telephone network. These tones were similar to touch-tone tones, but different frequencies. The box can be used to control a simulation of the old network running on an Asterisk PBX system under Linux. Dial 630-485-2995 for more info.

  • Is it true phiber optik started project MF?

  • Yes, quite true. He presented a demo at Hope 6.

  • Does the PIC tone creation code basically use a timer interrupt to toggle an output pin at the appropriate intervals?

  • Not sure if I replied to this....

The code uses PWM (pulse width modulation) and a low-passfilter to create actual sine wave-based tones. There is some sampling noise that gets through the filter, but the tones are pretty clean.

  • First off, MF and DTMF support 16 keys, on DTMF there is an added 1633 Hz tone that makes up the 4th row.

On MF there are KP, KP2, ST and ST2 in addition to the A and B (GTE) keys used for paystations.
