Issued in Canada July 1980 on Columbia C4-4255 and in the US June 1981 on Columbia 02068.

Paul Dean, from Vancouver, had been guitarist with Streetheart, until they fired him in 1979 without explanation. After a move to Calgary, Dean was rehearsing a new group. Not really wanting to front his own band, he asked around for a singer and was introduced to Mike Rynoski (Reno), who had spent two years in Toronto as vocalist for Moxy. The two began to write songs together, with Dean on guitar and Reno on drums. Keyboardist Doug Johnson began to hang out and jam with them, and out of these jams, Loverboy was formed. They recruited bassist Scott Smith, ex- of the Lisa DalBello band, and Paul Dean's bandmate from Streetheart, drummer Matt Frenette, freeing up Mike Reno to sing full-time. They signed with Bruce Allen and began their career opening for Kiss at the Vancouver Coliseum.

Loverboy's demos were rejected by all the major US labels, but they managed to sign with Columbia in Canada. In late March of 1980, they made their first album, engineered by Bob Rock (Payolas) and produced by Bruce Fairbairn. Over the summer, the album sold over 700,000 copies, setting records for debut albums. This fact could not be ignored by Columbia in the US, so they jumped on board and released the LP in the States in November 1980. By April 1981, it had gone gold in the US, and sold more than two million there, and four million worldwide.

Loverboy went on to tour with Cheap Trick, Bob Seger, ZZ Top, Kansas, Def Leppard and Journey, and were one of the first groups to receive exposure on MTV.

"The Kid Is Hot Tonite" entered the RPM 100 on August 30, 1980 at #94, and reached #34 on November 22nd. In the US, it was released the next summer, and entered the Billboard Hot 100 on June 20th 1981, reaching #55.

Pictured in the video is a rare promotional single issued in conjunction with the now-defunct Sam The Record Man chain.

  • wasn't this song a stab at ric ocasik from the cars?? I think I remember an urban legend about this??...anybody know??

  • This is the first I've ever heard of it. Remember, urban legends usually turn out to be urban legends.

  • I did not realize that Loverboy also dealt with rejection. They sure did have a good kick at the can in their heyday. Lucky you having another promotional gem in your collection...(how do you keep track of them all anyways).

Great pictures that sure do tell a story....

    Thumbs up again!

  • These guys got to experience the whole enchilada. It must have been a great thrill while it was happening. They're all still performing, except for Scott Smith, who was declared deceased after being lost at sea, on November 30, 2000. His place has been taken by Ken Sinnaeve. Ken had played in Streetheart with Paul Dean and Matt Frenette.

How do I keep track? Database. Large, perpetually unfinished database.

    Thanks!

  • rock & roll baby i love it i've been listening to it since i was lik 15 now im 16 and i love it

  • For me this song is all about the summer of 82' when I was placed in a group home, yeah, I was a screwed up 8 year old;My room mate was 11 and his parents bought him everything under the sun including a ghetto and this tape. God, even being ripped from my family at age 8, I just loved all of this music and it made the time go by so fast! Hell of a memeory to have but almost 38 now, it still resonates with me from radio station selection, kids hate it lol, to what I watch on Y.T! Go 80's forever!

  • I remember a high school phys-ed class where we were allowed a turntable into the gym to play some songs while we shot free throws and did lay-ups at the basketball hoops. I swear, this song increased our shot success rate. :)

  • Ha! I remember roller skating to this song! Felt like I was on top of the world .=)

    SKATE KING!

  • Used to play this 45 at my college radio station. I liked it better than "Turn Me Loose".

  • top song forget the rest

  • Why are the like and dislike buttons disabled? Loverboy was under-rated b/c of the name of there band. No guy wants to admit he liked a band called, Loverboy when he is 13 -22 years old. You can see them play live for free on Freemont Street Experience in Las Vegas. Seen them twice. Mike Reno does not sound like he used to but the music is the same.

  • Yeah I guess it was summer 1981, now that I think about it. That was one of my favorite summers!
