The voice and the technice are both just amazing. He is a great example, that the italian belacanto singing and the technice of the great german singers from the past actually are the same. What a delight to hear.
I saw him do Jokanahan(sp?) in Wien a little over 30 years ago. He was already well past his peak but did quite well. The Tristan and Kaiser mentioned above must have been quite a few years ago. He did a fine Walter in '51.
I've been a Hopf fan for 43 years! He not only sang every Wagner tenor role most expertly until the 1970's but excelled in Italian and French repertoire (sung in German) as well. The Walhall label has issued numerous radio broadcasts that showcase this side of him. I recommend the Carmen with Malaniuk, Berry, Schlemm and Andre Cluytens conducting, also the Otello with Kupper, Franz and Eugen Jochum (!) conducting. There's a Walhall Trovatore where he hits an unbelievably thrilling high C.
one of the very best tenors ever been onstage, he could sing Mozart, Verdi, Wagner and operetta.
In BA he sang Tamino shortly after breakfast and Siefried in the evening the same day., Jonas Kaufmann, you better listen.........................

Ein leider - von den meisten Menschen - unterschätzter wundervoller Sänger! Unvergleichlich sein Kaiser, Siegfried, Tristan, usw.
