Formed in Edinburgh by Michael Robertson and Craig Herbertson in 1976, Nicky Arkless and Kenny Dalgleish quickly joined and after a series of name changes and the advent of Punk, the boys from Portobello Comprehensive School became 'The Androids'. David Connelly added keyboards and for a few years The Androids toured Scotland playing village halls, pubs, clubs Universities and Colleges releasing one single, 'Robot Riot' in 1981.

At the high point of their brief career they supported both 'The Fall' and 'Doll by Doll' at the Nite Club, Edinburgh. In the mayhem of the Punk Rock years, gigs were booked but canceled with among others 'Robert Fripp', 'The Revillos' and 'The Exploited.'

The Androids began as progressive rock band, much in the style of King Crimson - at one point they were reviewed as 'King Crimson meets David Bowie' - and this is evident in 'Time Machine' a track which they continued to play live at Punk Rock venues to varying degrees of bewilderment.

A Napier College rag coined the new phrase 'Cosmic Rock' to describe The Androids, an epithet that apparently died with the band.

Michael Robertson: Lead Guitar, vocals
Kenneth Dalgleish: Bass guitar, vocals
Nicky Arkless: Percussion
Craig Herbertson: Vocals, Rhythm guitar
David Connelly: keyboards

  • A shame you did not take things further with the band. I really quite like this. Progressive rock without the self indulgence.

  • Thanks, punk rock killed it really
