Synopsis:

Ninja Scroll takes place about 500 years ago in Japan's distant feudal past when central authority is weak and various warlords compete for power. A wandering ronin with a fast sword is drawn into a duel with a demon and manages to escape with his life. The ronin, Jubei Kibagami, finds himself the target of attacks by more demons. He becomes the unwilling partner of an imperial spy named Dakuan, and Kagero, the last surviving member of a ninja squad that fell victim to the demon.

The three embark on a perilous journey to discover the secret of a village that has been wiped out by mysterious forces and to uncover a plot to overthrow the government. A romance develops between Kagero and Jubei, but there is a deadly complication with that. In the course of their epic adventure, Jubei comes face to face with a deadly enemy from his past. Along the way, they battle more deadly demons that have allied themselves with a mysterious "Shogun of the Dark."

Review:

Since its release Ninja Scroll has served as a 'gateway drug' to the world of anime. Nine times out of ten, if you talk to any hardcore anime fan, they'll tell you one of the first anime titles they saw was Ninja Scroll. Given the sheer volume of anime available on today's market, for a title to have that kind of recognition is special; this film, love it or hate it, is a permanent addition to anime culture in America, alongside Akỉṛa and Ghoṣṫ in the Sheḷḷ.

Ninja Scroll is partially responsible for the negative image Anime had in the mid to late 1990s, up through the recent explosion in the 2000s. This film is ridiculously violent, exploitative towards women, and is essentially wall-to-wall gory action sequences. The film gained notoriety mostly for its violence, not because it was a masterpiece of modern cinema; this was the sort of thing Junior High students traded around between each other in secret and college students watched as a rite of passage. While the character development and plot keep the film afloat just enough to make the viewer interested in the overall story-arc of the film, the real focus here is the well-paced and superbly animated action sequences that keep the film going at a break-neck speed—just enough time between them for the viewer to catch their breath before Jubei battles another enemy. No matter how you slice it though, Ninja Scroll is not admired for its touching, poignant story, or amazing character development; you watch it so you can see Jubei hack his enemies into a bloody pulp. So if by chance you're one of the people who haven't seen this movie, you've been warned.
