"Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität" is the largest of several
institutions of higher learning and research in Bonn.
University buildings are clustered in various parts of the city with
the main buildung and campus, bordering on the Rhine,
situated right in the middle of the city of Bonn.
The general intellectual atmosphere of the city is international,
political, corporate and academic.
Sports are federal league basketball, rowing, fencing, sailing, boating,
aeronautics, horseback riding, hiking, golf, tennis, shooting, hunting, fishing,
athletics and swimming, baseball, and, of course, football (soccer)
Bonn served as Federal Capital of Western Germany until reunification
with Communist Eastern Germany. Then, Berlin became the capital again,
but Bonn retained the functions of a 'Federal City' with many government departments
and agencies as well as of large entities that used to be federal services
and upon privatisation in the 90s became corporate
headquarters (like German Telekom, DHL, Deutsche Post, Postbank etc.).
Bonn also is host to a number of U.N. agencies and conferences, too,
on its U.N. campus on the banks of the river Rhine, and lots of
NGOs and lobbying firms.
