Back In The Day (60s): My introduction to "cool jazz" in high school was Herbie Hancock's, Maiden Voyage. He helped elevate the conversation (thinking) what was good music besides classical music. One of the many graduates of the University of Miles (Davis). In the 60s and 70s you could link good music too who played with whom and be sure that the "hotwax" you picked up in the store would set you on an interesting path to unexplored avenues. Herbie has always been unto himself, outstanding.

There are some great young musicians coming up. Maybe you need to get out more.

What I wrote is just merely an "outline" here for those starting with the tune ;) Saying that 3rd is a note to avoid is an overstatement which I shouldn't have made (I like to play the 3rd as well), but surely it creates tension which needs to resolve somwhere, so it is a different approach than in "straight" major licks over a major chord, and that's what I meant in previous post. Minor pentatonic fits perfectly into the tune, but it consists only those "safe" tones - might become boring ; )

Why not useminor pentatonic? It got all the notes you re after, 7, 9, 11th without the 3rd.

Atleast I tend to emphasise the 6th in dorian licks (which would be the 3rd in mixolydian)
