  • The more you know the more you realise aviation authorities are discretion of local authories, and sometimes there are exeptions, special circumstances and permits that can be explored.

Also certified aircraft including commercially built certified aircraft including trike qualify for more of these exeptions, including flying over built up areas etc.

  • In Canada basic ultralights are not allowed in the Control Zone of a controlled airport. Nor are we allowed to fly at those altitudes. Are US rules that lax?

  • You can fly with a transponder though controlled airspace. It is a complex area though and varies greatly from country to country and also depends on if the pilot holds a PPL, what sub registrant the aircraft is registered with etc.

Most countries have about a 5K limit for altitude but allow you to go higher for safety or operational limits.

  • How long did it take to get down?

  • About 3 mins if in a hurry (doing spiral turns), otherwise about 15 to 20 mins mins if gliding back down, depending on the thermals / wind etc
