Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China

Many children were seriously injured during the earthquake. Some of them have been evacuated and sent to hospitals in Chengdu for medical treatment.

CCTV reporter Liu Ying said, "I'm at the Pediatrics Surgery Ward of the West China Hospital. Many children from the epicenter in Wenchuan County are being treated here. All of them were evacuated by military helicopters."

12-year-old Wang Xing is a student of the Yingxiu Primary School in Wenchuan County. She was evacuated two hours after the quake and was sent to the hospital on Thursday morning.
The girl tells us her biggest wish now is to see her mother, whose whereabouts is still unknown.

8-year-old Guo Wen lying on the neighboring bed is also from Yingxiu Primary School. She tells us she was saved by her father after being trapped under the collapsed school building for a whole day. Her parents are still in Wenchuan to take care of her injured grandma.

Like Wang Xing and Guo Wen, many of the injured children in the hospital have no family with them here.
Some of their parents are still missing. As well as giving medical treatment, the hospital has arranged for volunteers to take care of them.
A volunteer said, "When I heard about the situation here, I felt uncomfortable just staying at home. I come here to offer my share of support as much as I can."

Foreigners living in Chengdu have also come to offer their help.

At this point there are more than 100 primary and middle school students being treated at the West China Hospital. The youngest patient is only two years old. Some of the children are severely injured and may have to have amputations. Medical staff and volunteers say they will do their best to help them both physically and mentally.
