In 1807, Robert Fulton created the North River Steamboat (aka, the Clermont) to show the viability of the steam engine. In 2009, a group of students from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute traced his steps up the Hudson River, but this time to demonstrate the viability of fuel cells.
