This is how we land in thick snow to avoid getting snow into the leading edge.

  • Great if you can guarantee your altitude the depth of the snow and that there's no obstruction under the snow. It could be a recipe for disaster though. That was a 20 foot drop right onto your butt/back in your case.

Parachutists have died cutting away over water when they thought they were low but were significantly higher than they pervceived. Skydivers are now told only to chop when feet are wet. This is similar w.r.t. altitude perception.

Not worth it for a little bit of snow.

  • I should point out, we checked the snow beforehand and it was 2 meters of fresh powder. Also the signal to stall was given by a ground observer by radio. Altitude perception here is not hard because of the trees around the LZ - This is why swoop ponds have flags around them. Worth doing IMO - knowing the stall point can save your ass in other situations. We also do spins and heli's.

  • hey this is friggin awsome!, i see nothin wrong with this, just thinkin outa the box n having some fun

  • The best way to test the stall point and subsequent recovery is on a SAT clinic flying at 1,500 ft (500 m). This looks like fun, but is useless as a learning method.

  • All of the information you just supplied is vital to keeping people who watch your video and want to replicate it safe. Just look at the comments.

  • Ok that was just cool. Nice!
