Paul Ryan merely talked about changing SS and Medicare for people *under* 55 and the Democrats made a video of him pushing granny off a cliff. Unless there is a repudiation of the Democrats this November that makes 2010 look like a slap on the wrist, we will soon find ourselves in the same boat (plane, maybe?) that Europe is in now. Yes, I know the Republicans aren't much better but at least there's a scintilla of hope in that party.

The indentity of america was that mix of militarism,cowboys,self rightenous protestantism all in support of the capitalism system and its epansion. The militarism remains even though not as strong in social terms, there is no draft but the best way to demonize an oponent is the "he is against the troops" argument and there still the belife that the army is there to "defend america" or the generals are patriots. Oreily is constantly appealing to that crowd.

I would certainly argue that family values, Christianity, Cowboys, and to a lesser extent a strong military are very much important aspects of what made and makes America exceptional. Racial segregation was not a uniquely American thing, it is a dark part of our history which was largely instituted by the Democrats. The Republican party have always been the party of freedom and anti-discrimination. It is these Republican values to which Mr. Whittle is trying to appeal.

I will not hide that i have a certain disdain for that because if that america from the "old days" was so great why has´t the american themselves preserved it? The america of family values, christianity, cowboys,militarism, racial segregation and so on? Because it probably wasn´t that great but many elements of that still remain and that is what this guy is constantly appealing to.

Huh. I'm ashamed to say this is the first time I'd ever heard of the 1st Minnesota. I had always given principle credit to the 20th Maine for the successful defense of Cemetary Ridge and ultimately keeping the confederates from getting the high ground.

besides, relax, dude... germany is in control. we'll come out of this crisis stronger, and mind you, i'm from Portugal. we have the same problems the greeks have: a failed "socialist utopia". but unlike the greeks, we elected a reform government to make massive cuts on spending. the private sector did it. our commercial balance (don't know the english term) is positive again: the people are spending LESS than what they produce.
