R.I.P. Satoshi Kon 1963-2010

As every year goes by, the big summer "Oh my gosh!" movie comes out and there is an AMV trailer for it. The big 2010 summer movie is Inception, and this is my AMV.

Inception was a very tricky film to find a matching anime for. Detectives, dreams, and a warping city landscape. Something that specific usually doesn't come in anime, or many other things either. So after a lot of research, the only anime wasn't a series, but appropriately a film by Satoshi Kon: Paprika.

I like Kon's animes, from Perfect Blue to Paranoia Agent and the rest. With Paprika's bizarre imagery and yes even dreams, it seemed like the right choice. Unfortunately there are no origami skyscrapers in the movie, but the themes and characters matched the trailer pretty well. Can't wait to see this in IMAX next month!

  • This just shows how ahead the Japanese are

  • I loved both movies. The funny part is that "Paprika" made more sense, and seemed even more realistic then Inception! LOL

  • @Lomito Nolan said Ellen's character was based on Paprika

  • There are tonnes of copying conspiracies about Inception and Paprika, and even though they have the same basis and even extremely similar scenes, I think it's safe to say it's probably just a coincidence and they're both great films in their own right.

    This was cool, btw.

  • @zonkiethegreat Actually I thought it was the other way around. :D (I'll rewatch Paprika , though, to make sure.)

  • das hast du wircklich geil gemacht!

  • The only time I wasn't disappointed, with an anime's usual inane structure, was with the first season of Gunslinger Girl, and then that headed back to shit in the second season when they lost funding...and brains.

  • @gregtestagent Well that is untrue, have you ever seen Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood? It did a perfect job on "showing a story". Also, It can surpass the majority of American film very easily.

  • One thing I like better about Paprika is that the setting of the dreams just change (it is what happened in my dreams, at less) and don't have to have some machines to change the setting even when they're already inside the dream because dreams are more or less supposed to be random. it is here that the whole Inception movie become unrealistic, and failed.

  • @DreVercetti According to some dude that attended to a Q&A with Nolan and del Toro, Nolan was questioned if he has seen Paprika and he said no.

  • @Lomito actually Nolan makes it pretty clear that Paprika was a major influence for Inception

  • DiCaprio looks weird.....
