When a puppy is put on a leash, it helps to play with them to help them disconnect from the feeling of something on their neck. Motivate a puppy to follow when they're on a leash with help from a dog trainer in this free video on pet care and obedience training for dogs.

  • help? my puppy it wont do anything its scared to move when it has its leash on i bring food and everything but its still wont move

  • If your puppy bites the leash, don't tug or "play" back. Give the puppy something else (like a toy) to hold instead of the leash. If you consistently ignore any attempt to play with the leash by letting it go slack and ignoring the behavior, your puppy will move on to something else. You might want to use inexpensive leashes until the puppy disconnects though! -Heidi

  • A leash is a safety device. There is no magic to walking a dog on a leash. The difficult part is acclimating your new puppy to the feel of a leash and getting your dog to move forward with you. If you need more help motivating your dog beyond this intro, join a group class in your area and have fun learning together. By the way, you will have a much better behaved dog and more control down the road if your dog learns to enjoy working with you instead of just being tied to you by a leash. -Heidi
