Chess is life, the rest is just detail.... ('97 Hyde Park, Sydney)

My first documentary made in '97, for the " Race Around the World" competition being held in Aus at the time. it was shot on a borrowed Hi-8 camera I got a hold of a borrowed edit suite 3 days before deadline. I started Friday night and edited it down to 5 min from 12 hours of footage in two sessions on NON-FRAME accurate LINEAR U-Matic machines ( hey before digital non-linear) and a controller... The cuts just drifted & couldn't get all of them to sync 100%. Once it was down, it was transferred to VHS & submitted. It has been duped at least twice more & as you can see the video degraded significantly by the time it was digitized, last year. I tried restoring it digitally but that's a whole expensive, art form that I realized best left to professionals... maybe one day.

An inspiration for my feature project "The 64 Squares" now in 2nd draft where Parramatta has become a major character! .... In any case enjoy!
