my brother's book was released recently. you can check it out at
http://www.behindhappyfaces.com
it's publication has implications for me.

also, i switched advisors and thesis topics from helioseismology to cosmology. the nsf is cutting funding for helioseismology right about the time i would graduate. there were other reasons to switch, but that was a major one.

also, the college newspaper needs a visit from the pun police.

  • what were the other reasons for switching your field of study? i'm considering going into helioseismology myself, but i'm not sure.

  • Largely, it was the data set I was working with. The experiment wasn't designed with the precision needed for local helioseismology (the study of subsurface plasma flows), so it was very frustrating.

  • thank you. i've had a few random people add me on facebook due to my brother's book, so i know the word is out there anyway. it, and other circumstances, have made for a long academic path, but people who deal with mental health issues don't gain anything from hiding them. if we don't put them on the same level as other health problems, there will always be stigma.

  • Bipolar disorder is usually manageable as long as you keep taking your medication. I've had two uncles with Bipolar who went off their meds. That's when they became scary.

  • yeah, the key is finding a treatment that works and sticking with it. hope they're both doing okay now.

  • Eww.

  • OH MY GOD! you wanted to destroy things when you heard 1999 also? hah! me too! do you think it has anything to do with having bipolar? i think a study needs to be done about this. maybe we can have a mass lawsuit against "prince," for all the mental anguish he's caused us for that song. however, he did write the song "when you were mine" that mitch ryder sings, so maybe we can forgive him and not have that lawsuit after all.

  • *aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh runs screaming* you have bipolar! heh i have bpI. aren't we special? yes we are. "oral sex can cause mouthful of problems." I LOVE IT! in the "trojan" news paper. if they used a condom properly they wouldn't have any problems, unless they used their teeth, maybe. my lord what is all this talk about galaxies?

  • I came due to the Carl Sagan tag.

I'm not sure about the organizational relationship of the topics in this video, but i am rather impressed. I think Carl would be pleased that another scientist is willing to take on difficult subjects that could be career-threatening; in your case it was bi-polar disorder. You're to be commended for your openness.

  • One I haven't seen in 20 years. The other is currently on his medications.
