I have head people saying FX will replace DX since 2009. It hasn't happened yet and probably never will. The camera manufactures like charging a premium for full frame cameras too much to finally admit that using a full frame sensor doesn't really add that much to cost to build the camera.

So in do time are we not going to be able to use the DX lens on an FX cameras. If so I will only buy FX lens than I hope not because I have a few DX lens's. also the 20-70 F2.8 and 70-200 F2.8 are insane lens i would buy them in a heart beat. My uncle has both he use them on the D300

@TerribleWone I guess I'm just not understanding how 24-70 is a 'dream' focal length for both DX and FX. When you're using it on DX, it's the equivalent of 36-105 on FX. If 24-70 is magical on FX, 17-55 is the equivalent focal length on DX.

@TheSnapChick "Would you buy a 36-105 for FX?" I have the 24-70 on one body and the 70-200 on the other when shooting (gridwalks and pitlane). I just think buying glass outside of the dream team is just redundant unless there is a special requirement for it (ie tilt shift or DC).
do you recommend the 17-55 f2.8 compare to 24-70 f2.8 for me with a nikon D7000 body. anyway I am not sure WHEN or WILL I'm goin full frame. And any thougths for the sigma and tamron 17-50 f2.8 coz their cheaper compare to nikon. Thanks Leigh! =)

@abybryan For DX, like the D7000, I much prefer the ability to get the wider angles with the 17-55.

14-24mm nikkor, will cover almost same range on a crop sensor (~22-40mm) those other few mm not covered by the 17-55mm DX lens can be covered with two feet (also focuses very close), the 24-70 is like a ~38-112mm which is kind of an awkward range, and the 14-24 is FX for future upgrades.. no need to invest in fine glass if it isn't going to be used with future bodies and no need to bind yourself to crop sensors when the alternative is compatible with DX and FX and eliminates vignetting on DX

@3antaralhatab I go with what I enjoy using for the gear I have in my hands now.

I'm currently shooting with a Nikon d300s. In a couple years I would like to be able to say that I own the Nikon D4.
If you know that you're going to move to FX eventually, would you still say get the 17-55mm in the meantime? I probably wouldn't use it again after getting my D4 and I dunno what it would be worth by that time.
Also, do you think the range of the 24-70 would work well for portraiture on a DX until I move to FX?

@aberturepriority Personally, I would not enjoy the 24-70 on a DX camera. I use the wider range of the 17-55mm very often.
