If I had to pick one unexpected standout during two weeks in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, it would have to be the pastry, or as I refer to them, "sweet rolls." Each and every supermarket (along with patisseries/backerei) had such a variety to choose from that ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I promptly went on a daily sweet roll orgy and snarfed down at least two each.
The RIMI and Maxima Supermarkets/Hypermarkets were also a revelation. (I always browse supermarkets when traveling.) Jim Beam Whiskey in a can? Potato chips in styles that I've never seen back in Chicago. Superb delis. And then there was the Baltic cuisine. I'm not referring to dumplings, cabbage and potatoes but the primarily pork dishes and salads. We never walked away hungry or disappointed.
If only I could have brought a gross of sweet rolls back with me to freeze, life would be perfect!
