The UN's Peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (monuc.unmissions.org) is the largest in the world, involving almost 20,00 men and women in a vast country the size of Western Europe. Since the beginning of this year, the governments of Congo and neighbouring Rwanda have been working together on a military campaign to end the violence in Eastern Congo, the Kivus, a campaign led by the Congolese army. The head of the UN operation, Alan Doss, sees some progress but also dangers.
