Vivian Maier, a street photographer and a long-time resident of Chicago, not only captured tens-of-thousands of still images but also shot movies and recorded sounds.

"The Americans" by Walker Evans was praised to the skies when it was published in the 1950s. I think Maier's work meets or exceeds his level, and is gradually getting the recognition it deserves.
