Quick tip: Do as much improv as you can with whoever is available. Thinking on your feet is an important skill regardless of your career.
Some movies (especially Will Ferrel's) require actors to improvise, some live performances don't go smoothly and actors need to think on their feet to keep the show moving, and some people ask for extra things in the casting office.
By the way: telling someone to prepare 16 bars of one song and then making them perform 16 songs they don't know and not letting them look at any sheet music whatsoever is really not cool. This rule applies especially to vocally taxing songs.
