@blacklanternz I really believe it was their lack of preparation, their lack of thought & most of all, lack of 'Respect' for the elements that put them in that situation. I's a terrible place to be, & it can happen to anyone. Ive been a water-man & surfer for over 20years, & i always have a saying, "respect mother nature, or she will disrespect you."

I guess this just shows you that no matter what you always have to be prepared, because you just never know when a day hike will turn into a month stranded. It would be a good Idea for them to at least have taken some sort of day pack with a big knife, metal messkit, and fire starter.
