(Bartender)The Lillywhite Sessions (LWS) is a collection of songs recorded by Dave Matthews Band in 1999 and 2000 and produced by Steve Lillywhite. The songs, recorded by the band as a follow-up to their 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets, were ultimately scrapped by the band. This is frequently attributed to pressure from RCA executives to wrap up the sessions and release an overdue (per contract), upbeat album (the LWS were considered on the darker side by RCA).[by whom?] Upon abandoning the album-in-progress, Dave Matthews was assigned to work with producer Glen Ballard who, in association with Matthews, wrote the album Everyday in just ten days. This contrasted with the band's prior style of writing, which included significant collaboration between the band members in the studio. The recordings later emerged on the internet shortly after the release of Everyday, and created controversy among fans as well as the music industry, which was early in its campaign to curb illegal file downloads. The Lillywhite Sessions were never released.

  • @Broadwaymungo they have and the next album will be great (i hope) I see another Grammy nod coming dave's way next year

  • i like the way this session is mixed compared to there recordings. carter may be a little loud but over all it sounds pretty full and well rounded in all areas.

  • could be that RCA has a problem with songs too long for radio airplay. I blame the attention span of the average american for the scrapping of this fantastic album.

  • Geez, I need a cigarette....

  • i could listen to stefan and carter jam on that outro ALL DAY!

  • @tmorri222 Amen, Brother. While there are other producers DMB might try working with; Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois (Hell, they cover two of his songs!), Rick Rubin (Amazing Work with Johnny Cash), they MUST reunite with Steve Lillywhite at some point. For now; The "Holy Trinity" of UTTAD, Crash & BTCS are the standard which they have failed to live up to ever since. Just one man's opinion, but you are spot on in your comments.

  • This version is the best recorded version of this song. So much more emotion than in Busted Stuff. Truly love this song. Simple chord wise and Carter is a drumming genius on the fills at the end.

  • DMB won't work with lillywhite because he'll actually make them work. Easier to coast on crappy pop songs like "you and me" and "dreamgirl" than write something like this again. Wish Lillywhite could have gotten his hands on shotgun, sugar will and a few others.

  • this is great man thanks!

  • This is their opus.
