This one got kinda long, but I was trying to be vaguely informative. I made a couple verbal gaffes (I called the Control Board the Control Support Board once, for example) - so use your head.

  • I' have managed to recover a Enterprise 420R (4x 450mhz 4Gb ram) and 5 StorEDGEs giving a complete Terabyte of SAN,

Altough i didnt manage to talk my dad into giving me the rack it was mounted in, because that heavy ass rack, he sold for scrap since he didnt want it in the house :(

  • @pioneerz450 Score! I always wanted a 420R, they're nice machines. Time to build your own rack :)

  • What is the proper name for the SSP

  • @unixuser011 System Service Processor, which in this case is just a Sun Ultra5 with some extra software on it and appropriate licence files.

  • Oh PLEASE tell me you got this beast to power on! I am eagerly awaiting such a video. Hope your knee surgery went okay. :)

  • @CaptainValor Knee surgery was a breeze. I only added appropriate power recently, so it's sort of the next thing to look at... when I get the chance

  • What are your plans for this machine now that Oracle have decreed "Thou shalt not use Solaris without a service contract"

I used to run a copy of Solaris 10 on an old x86 machine I had just as an experiment, but I had to decommission it when Oracle essentially invalidated my entitlement document.

  • @jpkiwigeek Yeah i , i have managed to clean it out and fired it up managed to

get solaris 9 on it, but ive run into a problem, I just cant manage to get the SCSI controller to detect the either the Disks in it or StorEDGE D1000 at all, witch atm is being used as a DAS. (just one of them but i plan on daisychain them all)

I've been trying the "probe-scsi-all" command from the (ok)prompt but it only detects the internal drives and the CD-rom.

Solaris9 alltough being very old is still competent

  • I cannot wait to see this baby power up. I actually just picked up an 8CPU / 32Gb Sunfire v880 for 100 bucks, I'm going to use it as my main server for everything, love the history behind these machines I've watched this video a couple of times.

  • @douro20 That's a Digital VT240. Only dumb term I've got in the states, but it's properly VT compliant (since DEC, you know, invented VTxxx) so it works on pretty much everything.
