101st Airborne Division 501st Paratroop Infantry Regiment soldier, PFC Elroy V. Huwe is laid to rest at 87 with full military honors. Having earned a Bronze Star for valor, 2 Purple Hearts and 4 battle stars for participating in D-Day, Holland Liberation, Alsace -Lorraine, the Battle of the Bulge Bastogne, he served his country with pride and honor. Never a hero in his mind, he did his job to fight tyranny and oppression. He was one of the lucky few who survived the glider insertion to Holland on account of his broken leg, still healing, from the D-Day invasion. He refused to be sent back to England during the Holland Liberation, because of a shrapnel wound to the gut, so that he could stay do his duty and fight with and for his comrades so that someone else would not have to do his job.

He served as Honor Guard at the Memorial service in Reims for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and as Honor Guard for General Eisenhower's headquarters in Germany.

He was baptized Lutheran as a child and was confirmed as an adult in the Lutheran faith. His confession of faith was clear and his life, an example of integrity, principal and honor.

During his military service he received 2 Presidential (Unit) Citations, a Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Arrowheads, 4 Battle Stars, Sharp Shooter badge, Good Conduct medal, French Cross of War, Belgium Cross of War, Dutch Orange lanyard (received 63 years after the liberation), Combat Infantry Badge, Parachutist Wings, and the European Theater Operation ribbon.

He is laid to rest with other fallen warriors at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Spooner, WI. USA
