I was only there for 54 hours in 1981 and I walked around the island three times on the beach. Took pictures and found a japanese fishing float. Like you said everything is within walking distance. Often i wonder how my life would have been different if the navy had not changed my orders and I had served on Midway for 2 years?

I live on Midway right now. The place is undergoing many upgrades as we speak. There are many logitstical challenges for getting supplies and materials here as often as they are needed. The island is open to the public... on a limited basis. There is limited housing. There are approx 50 contractors on island doing a very efficient job in maint, service, construction... doing the job of what once took twice as many people to do.

Are there people living on these Islands? I always thought they were just for military. In the same island chain as Hawaii, but over 1,000 miles to thr west. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The FWS won't maintain buildings, including historic Trans Pacific Cable houses and military buildings; demolition by neglect. They won't pain, and so toxic layers of paint are poisoning birds.
They won't mow or use herbicides and Verbasina is displacing bird nesting ground.
When MPC was there it was meticulously maintained at no cost to the taxpayer, and they had affordable visitation.
It's now costing millions of dollar a year and you can't practically go there anymore.
With a name of hazmat1972 I suspect you're an airport FF? I think at least one of the Daves is there right now? Tell them Hi from Bryan. How about Johnson? Is he still there?

Freebird Here: I was there from 79 thru 81 what a wonderful place to be for 2 years. What is this forbidden beach, we had part of the island that was suppossed to be off limits but that didn't stop most of us but the beach was walkable all the way around Island. Hated to hear the sound of a 4-wheeler on the video, where was your horse, like the Island is really hugh what 15 - 20 min. to walk where ever you were going. Weeds, what was your hurry could of made a really terrific video without the 4

I was actually trying to break down some of the noxious weeds so we could use the foot path again. Since the Natl Wildlife Service took over, most of the beaches are for wildlife only. We were allowed on the old enlisted beach, but the officer's beach is still off limit. It was common to get kicked off the island for repeated violations. But it certainly is a wonderful place.

I lived there from 1973 to 1977, the Island looks as if it has gone to hell, it is a shame the state of disrepair it looks to be in know. How do the Gooneys nest in all that crap!!!!!!!!!!!

If they can walk through it, they will nest in it. But it is difficult for them. Its been 3 years since I've been there, so who knows what it is like now.

Sorry for the late reply, I somehow missed your comment. The atoll is closed to the public, but I keep hearing that it will open to limited tourism soon. Or, you can sail nearby, break down and declare a marine emergency. Just be prepared to do some volunteer work. Its usually enjoyable work.
