This is a traditional Hungarian meal that my family has late every summer once our vegetables (primarily tomatoes) are ready to eat. "Szallona" is the Hungarian word for bacon, however this is bacon without meat, just the fat and rind. The bacon is cooked over an open fire and as the fat renders it's dripped onto rye bread. Once the bread is ready, it's topped with tomatoes, onions and peppers. The meal also includes kielbasa, a type of sausage. This footage was shot on Middle Bass Island, Ohio, in the western end of Lake Erie.

  • My grandfather's parents were Hungarian. He's the old guy in this video. I'm the guy with the ridiculous pony tail and the one who's keeping the tradition alive in my family, but I've passed it on to a friend who's got a little Hungarian in him, too, providing him with one of the two custom forks I have for cooking it. It's VERY difficult to find the szalonna, though. We have to request it from a local butcher and it's not that fatty, not like the stuff I see in pictures on Flickr.
