Benedict XVI received in audience the President of the Republic of Malta, George Abela, on Thursday morning, June 18th.During their meeting, several topics were addressed pertaining to the countrys situation, including the contribution it can offer to the international community in light of its position in the Mediterranean Sea, especially with regard to Africa and the Middle East. Both parts also recognized the fundamental role played by the Catholic Church in the Maltese society.George Abela, a 61-year-old lawyer and member of the Malta Labour Party, was elected the eighth president of the Republic of Malta in April, 2009.
