  • i have been a long time fan of Jerry Jeff walker.. more than 25 years. i think it was back in 1985 i heard Up against the wal red neck mother.. i was snagged then. Jerry Jeff is oneof the greatest american song writers that has never received the fame that has been long due. He is my long time favorite singer and i have all of his albums.. i love to travel and put his CDs inmy player and drive on.. he is and always will be (in my humble opinion) the greatest singer of American ballads. My hero

  • I've loved this song for at least 30 years. I'd only heard Steve Goodman sing it, but I really love JJW's version! I am also a huge Jerry Jeff Walker fan.

  • @bigmarty56 Michael Peter Smith, the song's author, also has his own version on YouTube. --Brian Enright

  • @ALEXPNORTON Alex, you may not be aware of John Stewart, who wrote an dproduced over 100 albums and died 3 yrs ago. One of my top four songwriter/singers, along with Kristofferson, Dylan and John Prine. --Brian Enright

  • @BrianEnright

No one can sing this song like Barbara Barrow who was married to Mike Smith when this song was written 40 years ago.

  • The Dutchman, what a wonderful gift to us all from Michael Smith. And JJW? My world would've been less without his work. Funny though, so many years ago before The NGDB had a huge hit with JJW's Mr. Bojangles, we had a little folk rock quartet in Newark, NJ whose set list included Mr. B. As Phil Ochs sang, "there but for fortune" (apologies to Phil).

  • look whose playing guitar. Lloyd Maines is sitting in the blue shirt. Hasn't changed all that much in the last 19 years.

  • @elmagnifico753 As I heard the story, Michael Smith's sister (named Margaret) was dating a Dutchman, or a guy named "Dutch." Michael started writing a song about a young couple, but the song seemed to have different ideas. It's about unconditional love, and the frailties of age.

  • Jerry Jeff does a great version of this very beautiful love song written by songwriter Michael Peter Smith (as opposed to the religious singer Michael W. Smith). Michael also wrote Spoon River and many other songs

  • I would sure like to know more about how this song got written
